Naupactus rivulosus is the type species of Naupactus. It is characterized by the scaly vestiture mostly sparse, except on some yellow, pinkish, purple or green stripes along midline and sides of pronotum, extended on 3°-5° intervals of elytra; the scutellum is white and the apex of elytra bears long erect setae.
Antennae are broad, pronotum is slightly truncate-conical, with convex disc having a deep longitudinal midline sulcus, strongly curved flanks and bisinuate beveled base; elytra have strongly bisinuate and thickened base, broad humeri, strongly convex intervals, striae with large punctures, and striae 3° and 4° connected near end of anterior third; front tibiae bear small denticles on inner margin and corbels of hind tibiae are broad, squamose.
Males are more slender than females, with more convex pronotum and subtriangular elytra.
Hibiscus sp (Malvaceae) in Brazil and Argentina (Bosq 1943). In Brazil causes damage on Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae), Vitis vinifera L. (Vitaceae), Citrus spp (Rutaceae) and Eucalyptus sp (Myrtaceae) (Silva et al. 1968, Lanteri et al. 2002a b, Guedes et al. 2005).
This species mainly associated with vegetation of the biogeographic provinces of Atlantic and Paranaense forests, Chaco and Cerrado.
