Introduced and invasive species, native to Africa.
Disease relations: Is vector of the Zika virus in its urban cycle (Bogoch et al., 2016), Yellow Fever virus, Dengue virus (Black et al., 2002), Chikungunya virus, and filariasis (Dirofilaria immitis). Main species of sanitary importance in Argentina and Uruguay. Stegomyia aegypti was able to harbor the Mayaro virus after an experimental parenteral infection and was able to transmit it effectively (Muñoz & Navarro, 2012).
According to Harbach and Wilkerson (2023) there is abundant evidence to elevate Stegomyia aegypti formosus to its original specific status: Stegomyia formosus (Walker, 1848).
