Diagnosis: A medium-sized species of the guttatus group! subgenus Hoftmania. It is very similar to C. brasilianum Forattini by virtue of the predominant extensive pale areas in the wing pattern, from which it can be distinguished by its smaller size, general yellowish brown coloration, and with only one distal spot in cell M1.
This species could be placed in the couplet 16 of the key for the Culicoides (H,) guttatus species group (Spinelli et aI., 1993), confusing with C. batesi Wirth & Blanton especially by the similarity of the wing pattern. However, a close examination of both species reveals that C. ferreyrai is a yellowish brown species, which also differs from C. batesi by the larger proboscis (P /H ratio 0.75 in C. batesi), eyes narrowly contiguos, rom crossvein pale (faintly darkened in C. batesl), and apex of vein M3+4 pale.
Characters for separating this new species from C. brasilianllm are founded in the diagnosis of C. ferreyrai.
