Fawcett (1927) demonstrated the transmission of the "Argentine curly top virus" of sugar beet by a leafhopper identified as Agalliana sticticollis. Subsequently, Oman (1934), in his revision of the genus Agalliana, examined the material used by Fawcett and determined that the vector involved was not A. sticticollis, but Agalliana ensigera (Nielson, 1968). On the other hand, Eckstein et al. (2014) reported the presence of 16SrIII group phytoplasmas associated with A. sticticollis in broccoli crops in Brazil; however, the role of this leafhopper as a vector of these phytoplasmas could not be demonstrated.
