This catalog includes the species of Cercopoidea and Membracoidea (Hemiptera-
Auchenorrhyncha) recorded from Argentina and Uruguay. These superfamilies along with
Cicadoidea, represent one of the most diverse lineages within Hemiptera, and include
important agricultural pests and vectors of phytopathogens worldwide recognized. All the
information available in this catalog was compiled from available scientific literature, the field
work of the authors and the review of material deposited in national and foreign
entomological collections. Notably, a significant part of the information resulted from an
exhaustive treatment of the specimens deposited in the entomological collection of Museo
de La Plata (MLP). This process has enabled the compilation of historical data from national
and foreign scientists from the mid-19th century to the present, as well as the addition of
material from numerous recent surveys. For each species, basic taxonomic information is
provided, such as synonyms, geographic distribution, and the most relevant bibliographic
references. In addition, many of the species are illustrated with photographs, in several
cases from type specimens, and information on host plants, natural enemies, and
phytosanitary importance is included.
This catalog is still under development; future updates will include the species of
Membracidae recorded in Argentina and Uruguay. Furthermore, newly published information
and species of Cercopoidea and Membracoidea will be incorporated into the catalog as they
become available.
