In Ronderos et al., 2013: The pupa of Culicoides crucifer Clastrier is described, illustrated and photomicrographed by using binocular microscope and phase-contrast microscopy from material collected in an artificial container in Manaus, Brazil. The pupa shows features typical of pupae occurring in calm and clean waters, and it is compared with its similar congeners of the subgenus Haematomyiidium, Culicoides annuliductus Wirth and Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz.

The only Neotropical species of the subgenus Haematomyidium with the following combination of characters: females with flagellomeres 4–12 subequal in length; sensilla coeloconica on flagellomeres 1, 6–8; palpal segment 3 slender with broad shallow pit; poststigmatic pale spots in r3 separated; cell m1 with two pale spots, distal one well separated from wing margin; cell m2 with pale spot posterior to medial fork and no trace of pale spot anterior to cubital fork; macrotrichia present on distal half of cells r3, m1 and m2, only few at extreme distal margin in cua1 and anal cell, extending in one row to base of m2. Male unknown.
The examined specimen perfectly agrees with the original description.
