Adhemarius daphne was reestablished as a good species by Vaglia and Haxaire in 2005.
Adhemarius daphne and Adhemarius gannascus are very similar to each other, and very variable intraspecifically. The background color of the hind wings is light pink with a minor black design in A. daphne and purplish pink with a greater black design in A. gannascus. The shape of the subapical spot on the forewings is subquadrate in A. daphne and crescent-shaped in A. gannascus. The oblique basal spot on the forewings is limited and does not lead to the costa vein in A. daphne and a defined strip reaching the costa vein in A. gannascus.
The subspecies A. daphne daphne is the one present in Argentina.
Caterpillar host plants: Lauraceae.
